Tuffy Hits #450

» 26 April 2009 » In npb »

Yesterday, Tuffy Rhodes went deep three times, hitting home runs numbers 450, 451, and 452 of his distinguished NPB career. I didn’t think Tuffy had 100 home runs left in him when he signed with Orix during spring training in 2007, but he’s hit 92 since then and shows no signs of slowing down.

Congratulations Tuffy! We’ll see you at 500!

Congrads to Tuffy on reaching this. It’s always a pleasure and a treat to see him smash dingers live (I saw him hit 2 last week at Tokyo Dome against Rakuten). Only 48 more to go so let the countdown begin…

I was there. It sucked because it was rainy and windy and cold and I was on the Fighters’ side and Mamoru Kishida decided it’d be a good day to pitch 5 perfect innings. Oddly I’d even been saying before the game that I expected it to be a high homer game thanks to the wind; I didn’t expect that all three homers hit would be by the same guy again…

But yeah, Tuffy’s 450th was a shot into the rightfield stands at Skymark off rookie Ryo Sakakibara, and they even put the milestone up on the scoreboard and gave him flowers (I have a shot of that on my blog). We were all saying on our side of the field, “残念けどすごい。。。”

He was funny in his hero interview too, which he did in Japanese because he’s cool like that.
