Igawa on the Move?

» 12 December 2008 » In mlb »

Update, Dec 12: Sanspo is now reporting that a deal to the Brewers is ‘imminent’. The scenario put forth has Igawa included with Melky Cabrera in exchange for Mike Cameron. Bleacher Report disagrees though. Sanspo also says that the Yankees were trying to trade Igawa to Detroit for money.

Sanspo is reporting that Yankees are making progress in trade discussions involving Kei Igawa. Sanspo is calling out the Tigers as the most interested party, but they may just be enjoying the fact that Igawa is a former Hanshin Tiger. Igawa was decent in AAA in 2008, but the $12m he is still owed over the next three years is the stumbling block for an acquiring team.

Igawa is not the Yanks’ 40-man roster, and thus eligible for the rule 5 draft. Selecting him would require the acquiring team to keep him on their big league roster all year, or offer him back to New York (I think they’d probably let him go).

I like the idea of the Tigers liking Igawa because he’s a former Tiger. That’s as good a reason as any.

Igawa <-> Sheffield sounds about right to me.

I don’t really consider that contract a stumbling block when it comes to Hanshin. Considering that Hanshin recently offered Miura 3 years and 900 Million Yen, I don’t see why Hanshin doesn’t jump on this and get their ace back (because the consensus is that Hanshin hasn’t really had a true ace since Igawa left to begin with). They’ve shown that they are obviously willing to spend on pitching and it all makes perfect sense (in my view at least). And besides, I’m not really hearing anything on the Tigers making progress with Kawakami as Patrick suggested a few weeks back and which I totally agreed with.

Note that the article talks about him going to the Detroit Tigers.

Ha, that would be a great move! Though, I think Igawa will be like the D-Train and they both won’t get back on the rail (Igawa was never on it). What Igawa has proved himself to be is that he’s an AAAA player, maybe he can work out of the pen though, and the vast Comerica Park should help him.

I’d day Igawa goes to some lowly national league team for some token prospect and the Yankees eating up half of his contract.

Oops, my bad. I guess I should pay more attention to the articles but whatever. Now that Detroit has acquired Edwin Jackson from the Rays, why would they even think of acquiring a pitcher like Igawa? I mean sure he could give them some depth but why do it? Especially after they traded a capable up and coming outfielder in Matt Joyce to the Rays.

Yeah, Igawa no longer makes sense for Detroit now that they have Jackson.

Latest news has the Brewers interested.

Well, Tyler Kepner of the NY Times said the Brewers wanted Igawa in the Cameron for Cabrera trade while writers from Milwaukee claimed the Yankees wanted to include Igawa in that deal.
IMO the latter makes much more sense.
