Darvish Denies MLB Move

» 19 October 2010 » In mlb prospects, npb »

I’ve been deliberately waiting to weigh in on the Yu Darvish rumors until information from credible, on-the-record sources emerges. With the exception of Nippon Ham manager Masataka Nashida saying that he wanted to keep Darvish, we have only had reports citing anonymous “persons familiar with the situation”.

Until now. Darvish himself has come out and addressed the rumors on his blog. I’ve translated the post in its entirety below:

Things are being said about the Majors.

I’ve received a lot of comments on my blog and Twitter, but I don’t know if everyone’s predictions are on the mark or what.

Next year…

I’ll be wearing a Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters uniform.

And here’s the original Japanese. I don’t think Darvish will mind me publishing it here.

メジャーどうこう言われています。

ブログやTwitterにもたくさんのコメント頂きましたが、皆さんの予想が合ってるかどうかわかりませんが。

来年は…

北海道日本ハムファイターズのユニフォーム着ていますよ(^^)

So there we have it. Those rumors will have to wait for another offseason.

I dunno hasn’t he said in the past that he wants to stay in japan? So these are just the usual rumors?

But hasn’t he stayed in Japan in the past? So they’re not usual rumors, they’re usual facts.

Thank you for some resemblance of sanity in reporting about Darvish. I only hope that everyone else will learn from their mistakes in taking what Sponichi writes as anything other than creative writing.

Michael, I doubt this will stop silencing the people & reporters who arent willing to research anything, like why isnt Darvish being posted to MLB? Though I’m finally glad that Darvish himself came out and put a end to this, I get sick of it every offseason, with those saying this is the year that Darvish will be posted. IMO, I dont even think Darvish wants to play in MLB, could be proven wrong down the line, but that’s what I took from it in the past.

While I understand that it is telling that Darvish came out and denied a pending move, is his the final word on the topic? In MLB, players express their preferences about being traded or not all the time, but the team to which they belong makes the decision about whether they stay or go. Obviously posting is not trading, and NPB is not MLB, but I wonder whether posting is up to the player, the team, or whether agreement between both is required. Can you help clear this up for me? Thanks!

The player and team have to agree to the posting. Posting always seems to originate with the player; I’ve never heard of a team posting a player who didn’t ask to be. I covered this specific piece of news earlier in the week at FanGraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php?author=11926
