Velocity Charts of the Week
A couple of velocity charts this week jumped out at me:
- Eulogio de la Cruz made his Yakult debut on June 15, and showed great velocity but bad command. Case in point: he hit 158 kmph on the gun, but it was on a fastball in that dirt.
- Another Yakult pitcher, Yoshinori, hit Rakuten with a barrage of fastballs last Sunday. He too showed strong velocity, but had very few strikeouts to show for it.

You do realize those numbers come from Jingu guns, don’t you?

Yoshinori’s are from the K-Sta gun. And the interesting thing about his chart for me is that he only threw fastballs for his first 39 pitches.

Here are highlights of that game.

42-year-old Yamasaki is the only hitter who nailed Yoshinori’s straight second time around that day.

Jingu’s guns aren’t ALWAYS fast, although I found myself a little suspicious of Hirokazu Sawamura’s supposed 157 in a game a few weeks back.
Does the fact that De La Cruz was throwing all of that through pouring rain change anything? I have no idea, but it seems like the rain and wind could have affected either the gun or the pitches themselves, really…

I would say the rain would be more likely to affect command than velocity, but de la Cruz always had great velocity and bad command in the States too.
